Operationalization and review of coal blocks are crucial processes that involve the allocation, development, and assessment of coal mining operations in the country. The government of India, through the Ministry of Coal, allocates coal blocks to public and private sector entities for exploration and extraction of coal reserves. These blocks are then operationalized, leading to coal production, and subsequently undergo periodic reviews to evaluate their performance.

A Monitoring Committee has been constituted under the Chairmanship of Secretary (Coal) with Chief Secretaries from respective Host States, Secretary (MoEF and CC), Coal Controller Organization (CCO) and CMPDIL as members of the Committee to conduct regular reviews and to expedite the development of blocks. Also, a Project Management Unit has also been appointed by Ministry for handholding of coal block allocattees for obtaining various approvals / clearances for early operationalisation of coal mines.

Expediting the operationalization of coal blocks is vital for ensuring timely and sustainable coal production in India. The Ministry of Coal, along with regulatory bodies, monitors the performance of the coal blocks and identifies areas for improvement.  The Ministry of Coal's focus on simplifying procedures, fast-tracking clearances, providing infrastructure support, encouraging technology adoption, monitoring progress, and promoting collaborations reflects its commitment to expedite the process and maximize the potential of coal reserves in the country.

The operationalization and review of coal blocks in India play a vital role in managing and optimizing the country's coal resources. They help ensure sustainable coal production, environmental protection, and social welfare. By fostering transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement, these processes contribute to the responsible and efficient utilization of coal reserves in India.
